The solution to your dilemma is most likely a stronger magnetic 
force.  So aiming for one of those is probably the direction to 
take.  You might try raising the HO magnet a bit higher, but that 
risks snagging the gladhands.  One thing to NOT try is to take the O 
scale under-the-ties magnet and trim off the edges to fit between the 
S rails.  Been there tried that.  Didn't work since most of the 
magnetism is concentrated on the edges which were trimmed off.  The 
next best answer probably involves the use of one, or more, 
under-the-ties magnets.  I use two of them with the included 
intensifier plate mounted directly beneath the rails and get plenty 
of magnetic strength -- enough so that I can use standard HO couplers 
without extending the glad hands at all.  Works great, but you would 
have to cut out a section of your beautiful ballasted roadbed.  Good
