Why model in S? If you like the size...if you like a little more
distance between the rails...then maybe S scale is right for you. If
your comment that HO doesn't work really holds....then if you're not
in a hurry, or if a look at S Helper Service's Showcase Line, American
Models and Bill's Train Shop convinces you that what you want to model
is available...then have at it. If you don't feel compelled to have
everything or anything you can think of "NOW", then S scale can work.
If you're planning to do some serious prototype modelling and
replicate specific prototype scenes....then scratchbuilding is going
to be a part of your life...and you really have the freedom to pick
whatever scale you want. S can work pretty well here, too. If what you
don't see on a website or store shelf doesn't seem limiting, then S
scale can work. If spending time on your layout building models of
cars, detailing engines, painting rolling stock, lettering, etc. etc.
etc.....if you enjoy model railroading the old fashioned way...S can
work. If you never want to touch a thing but run nostalgic American
Flyer two-rail "hi-rail" or "tin plate", S scale can work here pretty
well, too.

But what's true for S scale is also true for the more popular scales.
Your space calls for some pretty sharply defined choices. My
recommendation is that once you enumerate some of these more clearly,
it will be easier for someone on this lest to help you determine
whether those choices are really compatible with S scale. Heck, the
other day I heard from a modeller building an 1870's steam layout in
in S scale....just about the hardest to-do thing I've heard...but he's
not intimidated.

I've done N scale, I've done HO, and I've drooled over O scale....just
can't seem to talk myself out of S scale....but I do keep trying
every now and again. Best of luck to you.
