A few weekends ago, I set up an S scale display with a figure-8 built on it.

After a few early problems were fixed, the train ran just fine on both days.

Having a train running on a figure-8 running with just enough cars to clear
the diamond and avoiding a near-miss (aka 'hit'). This beats an oval or
figure-8 with a couple of cars.

For those who don't recall, the figure 8 was built with SHS sectional and a
custom-made crossing. The table was about 4 by 8 with hinged sections
2 feet in from each end. The diamond posed no problems.

I will be working on some pictures and text and will post them to the list
in case anyone's interested in trying their own.

The biggest rub with the display was that the display extends to 8 feet
but the table provided to sit it on was only 6 feet. This caused the ends
to sag and the result was derailing cars at the hinge transition points.
Fortunately I found this at the Friday evening setup so Saturday morning
I brought along a couple of legs to support the ends. The train ran fine after
that.

I don't know if clamped joints rather than hinged joints would have made
a difference.

Saturday's train was a straight DC operation, while Sunday was set aside
for DCC. The planned loco (for part of the day) ended up having a failed
decoder (a matching HO version was going to follow on a flatcar). Loco
set #2 (the afternoon train) ended up running all day. This set was an AM
FA pair with Soundtrax installed. The only 'problem' here was that the
train was 'loud - metal wheels on metal rails)' on the SHS + hard insulation
base so the engine run was hard to here. Its horn and whistle were easily
heard however. The sounds, along with the "close calls" made child and
adult alike smile at the setup. The display was only 30+ inches above the
floor so most children could view the display at eye level. There was
minimal 'touching' and I think there were only two derailments over the two
days because of it. I don't think an electrified fence is needed. A stare-down
does wonders : )

In closing, many thanks to the NASG for providing the various flyers and
extra magazines for the weekend. I also had some CSSQ newsletters and
membership forms for anyone to take.

As a result of the weekend I did find out there were at least two more S
gaugers in the county. That makes at least 4. : )
