Hi Dave....

I had the answer for you -- until I read the last part of your message.
Y'know, the part where you said you don't like paying new prices. Up
until that part, I was right there with you and was going to state that
John Verser and son Felix were here during O SCALE WEST and John
whispered in my ear that another run of PFE reefers was in the near
future. But if'n you don't like to pay the "new car prices", I can only
suggest going to a used car lot. Perhaps the NASG convention in
Altoona, PA will have some of those cars. eBay has had them, but they
are not much cheaper than the new ones. A definite scarce item to be
sure. I cannot change the world market's price for soybeans or for PFE
reefers either. Sorry.

> So where would the new modeler go to build
a roster in a reasonable time?

Let's assume that time and reasonable fair cost (not necessarily
"bargains") are the primarily goals. I would suggest you locate a
trusted friend in two or three different areas of the country and give
them your shopping list. Ask them to attend the S-oriented train shows
and/or conventions in their general vicinity and buy things on your
behalf. Most of us olde tymers have done this for very specific items,
but there is no reason it cannot also work for dozens of used PFE
reefers as well. If you have no friends, perish the thought, you could
probably find a friendly S dealer out there that might be willing to
take your shopping list with him to the S-FEST, Spring Spree, NASG,
etc., etc. conventions and buy things on your behalf. I'd be willing to
bet that if you put out a public request for some assistance to "da
guys" on this list, that you might be able to find several folks willing
to help out.

> Are there S scale shows like OSW with a
lot of old stuff?.

You bet. Lots of them. Every year in many different parts of the
country.

>Given the hurdles of S scale accumulation

Whoa.....these are "pseudo-hurdles" which exist only in the mind of the
shopper. They do not really exist. You can find almost anything
anywhere anytime -- with some patience and willingness to pay the fair
market price. Some things are sold out and are not currently being
produced. Same as in HO and other scales. The problem, in my opinion,
is that folks tend to want things on display at the local hobby shop
with a friendly clerk to take your plastic. But that ain't S scale for
better or worse. But the stuff IS available with a modicum of effort.
We S scale guys have accommodated to the need for mail order and it is
part of our hobby. For various outsiders, mail order seems to be a
strange and feared beast. Unfortunate.

> I can see someone giving
up and doing three rail O scale instead.

I'm sure it has happened. Especially if the fellow likes subway cars.
But they do not HAVE to give up on S nor do they HAVE to go without S.
All they need do is exhibit a bit of creativity, contact some dealers,
go to a convention, make some friends, and the S world all of a sudden
looks a lot more tolerable.

So when're coming over the hill for a visit? Cheers...Ed L.
