We probably need to be careful about assuming that the majority of people on the S-scale internet list are active modelers. They could be, and I amnot saying they are definitely not. Remember though that Frank Titman, one of the most active modelers to come on the scene, does not--as I understand it--even own a computer. No question about it: Fooling around on the computer as I am doing now takes time away from modeling.
Take a look at the steamfreightcars list. I think it has about 900 subscribers, but most are silent observers. Perhaps they all model actively and aggressively, but the models that show up in photos on the list come from about 25 to 30 people or so. I say again: True, the rest could be busily modeling in their basement, attics, or wherever. On the other hand, I have about 30 unbuilt kits in my current stash and still I take time to kitbash. That takes more time away from assembling those unbuilt kits. When I finish converting the AM wood caboose with its radial roof to a peaked-roof saddle coupla version fashioned after the kind found on the Chicago Great Western, I plan to go to work on an SHS PS-2 covered hopper and kitbash it into a Pullman-built covered hopper with square hatches. It will take weeks to do all this because I still work and fool around on the internet. I suspect whether the scale is HO or S or O modelers have quite a few unbuilt kits in their inventory and that things progress slowly, and in some cases hardly at all.
