While reading a book about the Boston & Albany RR (merged with the NYC in 1900), I ran across an interesting paragraph pertaining to the California Zephyr running on NYC tracks. I immediately thought of the effort to rustle up orders for Kaslo's CZ train and thought this might be of interest to some:
"...I went down to the station [Warren, MA]...and watched the Zephyr come through, making its early tour over the B&A to Boston, even before it got to Colorado. It went from Budd Company's Red Lion shops outside Philadelphia right up the eastern seaboard. And what showmanship! The train was visited by an incredible number of people before it ever got to Burlington land." The writer goes on to state that many other famous trains traveled to Boston via the B&A tracks. His list includes: The Rexall Train, The City of Salina (referred to as "that ugly Union Pacific thing"), the Coronation Scot, the Flying Scotsman and others. Interesting motive power that ran on B&A tracks included: demonstrator engines from ALCO, EMD and Fairbanks-Morse. Special trains were those of Harry Truman, Wendell Wilkie, Thomas Dewey and Alfred Landon. With regard to the NYC's NEW ENGLAND STATES, this was stated: "...it [the B&A] was really the big gun with the great steel fleet, with trains like the Twentieth Century's Boston Section, later called the NEW ENGLAND STATES,...." Technically, this is incorrect since the Boston Section stopped at Albany, NY and attached itself to the 20th Century Limited enroute to Chicago. By contrast, the NEW ENGLAND STATES did not even stop at Albany. And the NES served clam chowder at breakfast for those proper Bostonians. Interesting, eh? "S"o it would appear that those of us modeling the B&A/NYC could run a wide variety of trains on our tracks and still be prototypically correct. Even the California Zephyr, much to my surprise. Of course, to be precisely correct, only one trip and then no more. But we all know about "modeler's license" -- right? Or, we could turn the clock back one day each day. Just have to hit the correct day for these unusual events. And not to leave out those Pennsy guys, it would appear the California Zephyr must have run from Philly to New York City on PRR tracks. How else could it get there? Did I just quadruple the potential number of Zephyr customers by including the NYC and PRR enthusiasts? H-m-m-m-m....
