In view of the recent discussions re the Burlington Zephyrs, I thought the list
might find the following of interest. It is the text of a Burlington Lines ad
from the March 1945 issue of Trains. (Yes, I'm 60 years behind on my reading.)

AROUND THE WORLD A THOUSAND TIMES!
Shortly after the first of this year, Burlington's fleet of fourteen
diesel-powered, stainless steel Zephyrs attained an unprecedented total in
train miles of service -- 25,000,000!
In rolling up the equivalent of a thousand times around the world, the Zephyrs
have proved many things. Their tremendous patronage has shown the public's
enthusiastic endorsement of these speedy, luxurious, streamlined trains. Their
almost unbelievable record of availability and "on-time" performance, in the
face of high speed schedules, has established the might of diesel power. Their
beauty and stamina are a tribute to the design and structural strength of these
fast trains. (The Pioneer Zephyr, first of the Zephyr fleet and America's
first diesel-powered streamline train, has nearly 2,000,000 miles to its credit
and has already started on its second ten years of service.)
Yes, America has given the nod of approval to the Zephyrs and the kind of
travel they typify. So there will be more of them in the days ahead. They
will be even more efficient, more luxurious. For improvement is the mandate of
progress.

Although Trains readers of the time were in a higher than average income
demographic, and therefore probably better educated than average -- similar
demographic to model railroaders, by the way -- the advertisement itself would
have appeared in magazines of all types. By today's standards, that's a lot of
text for an ad aimed at a general audience. People were still willing to read
and write in those days.

Incidentally, as I continue my reading of model railroad magazines of the time,
I note William K. Walthers was opposed to the introduction of S Scale after the
war when model manufacturing would resume. His advertising stated he would not
support any "new" scale, which he considered pointless, and would only support
HO and O.
