A couple of more thoughts....

 - Replace the 12 volt supply with a 5 volt

 - You can also use inexpensive diodes (1N4000 series) in series to
    drop your voltage.
    Each diode drop is about .6 volts so you'd need a lot for the 12 volt
    supply but only a few with the 5 volt.

- If anyone's going to Dayton in May, there's also a BIG Amateur radio
   flea market in town at the same time.  If you know someone who's
   going ($25 at the door), you can get a pile of IC regulators (as well as
   other components) for cheap.

- Don't know what Radio Shack US is like for parts now.  RS Canada
   basically eliminated parts.  If you want any you have to go to their
   website.
