Now that I think of it, if you would be happy with Canadian examples, the Andrew Merrilees collection of the Public Archives of Canada will most likely have what you need. Merrilees, a railroad equipment dealer, was also an historian who accumulated a wonderful collection of significant equipment data dating right back into the 19th century, including builder's and railroad records, diagrams and photos.
