Hi group. To reduce prototype weight in pounds to ounces, there are a
couple of ways. (1/(64*64*64) or 1/64*1/64*1/64 = each one gives you
0.00000381. Multiply that by the number of pounds. Multiply that number
by 16, and you have ounces in weight for S. I.E. - a 48000 pound car
weighs 2.93 ounces in S. If it carries a 50 tons - 100,000 load, that
load is 6.10 ounces in S. A loaded car weighs 9.03 ounces in S. If it
carries 70 tons - 140,000 load, that load is 8.53 ounces in S. A loaded
car weighs 11.46 ounces in S. Now, if a Bethgon Coalporter carries 100
tons, plus weighs 25 tons, you have 250,000 pounds - under the maximum
car weight on rails of 264,000 pounds. Or, 15.24 ounces in S - almost a
pound. Imagine the effect on our model railroads if we mixed loaded and
empty cars the way the real railroads do. It also explains why some cars
on the real railroads are always put on the rear of trains. Hope it
helps. Barry.
