I had the great pleasure this last weekend of working with John Foley, NASG
Publicity Chairman, at the Great Scale Train Show at the Maryland
Fairgrounds in Timonium.
When I arrived on Saturday, John had already done the hard work the day
before of setting up the NASG module and preparing the publication racks.
All I had to do was to sit behind the module, run trains and answer questions.
And we did receive quite a lot. Although John said the attendance overall
was less than at previous shows, we had a fairly brisk business at the module.
Many HO and O scale modelers came by. Many said that they would have
changed over to S had they come upon the scale at the outset of their modeling
career. Others said they had too much non-S 'stuff. John had an answer even
for these folks: put the HO in the background for "selective compression".
I spent my time conversing with HOers, talking up postively the benefits
of S. On of the most convincing things is to hand an S scale care to the HO
inquirer and let him/her hold it. That convinced more than one individual
to look seriously at S.
I can't say enough nice things about the literature. We had the NASG
magazine and handouts for distribution and they moved quite well.
John's good spirits and steady, patient dedication are noteworthy: S
has a real stalwart in him.
I'd encourage others to work with John. It's fun, you get to run trains
and, if worst comes to worst, you can always spell each other and go look at
trains.
Regards.
