One fellow I remember (from long ago) had a small layout and seven or eight 
hundred cars. He had a yard with one or two tracks (I can't recall) that 
terminated in a simplified car float operation, more like a removable 
storage track. He would push a cut of cars onto a 3' long board laid with 
rail which was then removed and stored on a wall display, much like a toy 
train collection. This simulated cars being sent off line to connecting 
roads and then a new board containing a cut of cars replaced the outbound 
cut as coming into the yard for distribution. He used a card system for 
tracking and it made an interesting operation as so many cars on hand 
guaranteed that no two trains were ever alike. It was an impressive sight 
as three walls had storage boards on shelves from floor to ceiling loaded 
with cars.

He also had a couple of boards with locomotives which would have been on 
trains to other terminals so that his engine terminal wasn't blocked with 
more locos than would normally be on hand.

The Milkwaukee Road had a car float operation ( I believe) on Lake 
Michigan, (or they connected with one). It would be on solution to more 
rolling stock than track. Just a thought...
