Friend of prototype modeling: About seven days ago I commented that it would be "nice" to have kits of the B&O wagontop box car, the B&O wagentop covered hopper, and the Milwaukee Road horizontally-ribbed box car. Someone--quite correctly--responded that one cannot just go on with "it would be nice if ...," one has to do something about it. Well, I am ready to work on part of it. If that part works, I would be willing to take up the other part. So here goes: Quite some time ago--probably more than two years ago now--I spoke with an individual who had produced the Milwaukee Road horizontally-ribbed box car in O-scale. I asked him how hard it would be to do a similar model in S. He replied that it was doable, but--as I recall--he would need 100 orders. The price quoted at the time was $70.00 per car. That would be less trucks. I would be willing to renew the discussion with said person if an interest actually exists out there. It is quite true that $70.00 is a chunck of change for ONE car, but the car in question is a unique prototype. I do not know how many have been following the articles by Ted Culotta in MRC, but Ted has written about his assembly techniques for quite a number of cars, most of which he calls "essential" freight cars. The reason for the sobriquet, as I understand it, is that the cars were produced in sufficient numbers to be seen on almost any railroad. Although he has yet to write about the horizontally-ribbed MILW car, I think it is on his list. In any case, most of the cars he writes about are actually Sunshine kits. They are quality kits with excellent detail, but even in HO they do cost a bit. Anyway, I am leading up to the question of whether a sufficient number of people would be interested to make a commitment for such a project. KASLO has done very good work for us in the past, but I think their plate is overloaded at the moment. Hence, my querry to the other party. I would be glad to be point man or whatever the proper term is for the B&O project as well, but my plate, too, is piled high. I will, in any case, be out of the country for the month of June. It would be nice to know if people really would be interested enough in the Milwaukee project to commit hard cash. No cash now, just contact me off list about your interest. "Interest" by definition here means that whoever expresses "interest" will actually commit cold cash to the project ahead of time. Contact me off line if you would like a Milwaukee Road ribbed car on your layout. The car would be in kit form and would require assembly. Tom
