Gentlemen (and ladies),
This has been done before, abet in O Scale. The Lionel Trainmaster
Shell is scale length, scale height, scale width. Remember, this is the
shell only. Using the article "RMC/Dremel Kitbashing Award of October
1977", you will find instructions on how to convert the Lionel H24-66
shell to an accurate, H16-44 in O Scale. The magazine can be
photocopied from our NASG library and other sources.
For trucks, frame, etc., one uses the AHM C-Liner mechanism. It
all works. I know, I did one in by brief O Scale period and it makes a
nice engine. (Being the only S Scaler I knew of in the entire USA in
1978 does dampen one's efforts. Especially with the O Scale explosion
of the mid 1970s. I eventually returned to S Scale ready to
go-it-alone. I discovered I was not alone in 1984.)
It shouldn't be hard to take the same instructions, make the same
cuts to the shell, and kitbash an H16-44. ('H' for 'High Hood', 1600
horsepower, two 4 wheel trucks = H16-44.) An AM RS-1 mechanism should
work and even the fuel tank isn't that far off. Ron Bashista (AM) will
sell anything he makes, in whole or parts, if he is asked! The problem
are the sideframes. Only FM had the curved side frames and they are
very unique.

Good luck and keep us posted!
