For the record, my Heck note to Bill was intended to be private, as for any
other infraction. My ooops in sending it to the list. There are other lists
where infractions are discussed by the moderator on-list. I prefer to do so
privately. Since my note went to the list, I'll provide the following to the
list also.
Why "no cussing"? This list is intended to be open to all hobbyists; any age,
any sex, any religion. Profanity, vulgarity, cussing, etc. are offensive to
some, and to the best of my knowledge do nothing to add to the usefulness of
the list; therefore there is no benefit to using them. When they bring no
benefit and are offensive to some, why use them?
Each time the issue of profanity on the list is discussed, I get a few notes
asking why I bother with the minor issues, and I get a few more thanking me for
keeping to keep the list clean. When I ask that people keep profanity, etc.
off the list, it is very difficult to be arbitrary and say that some "mild"
words are ok and others not. As soon as an exception is made for one word,
then somebody says that another word should be okay to use because it is only a
little worse than the one that was just okayed. This is NOT hypothetical. It
has happened. The simple rule of NO PROFANITY is intended to avoid uncertainty
regarding what is ok and what is not.
If there is a word that you question, feel free to ask me off list.
