Tom,
Like steam locomotives everywhere; these ATSF engines are specific to the
Santa Fe and no other railroad. There are simularities and to the untrained eye
could be almost interchangeable.

The ATSF tenders used here are TOTALLY unique 27,500 gal water, 5000 gal
oil. No other road had these. Possibly the largest tender ever used.

As for pics, they're pretty common with a little searching, Start with the
Santa Fe Historical Society online.

". . . . . does it seem that the Burlington version he's doing is going to
be somewhat prototypically correct? I ask because of the pictures I've
seen of the ATSF (both his model and prototype), it seems the feedwater
heaters, domes (steam and sand) and other features don't look like the
CB&Qs.

. . . . . I assume more information will be forthcoming from AM, (and from
our own research). In the mean time, here's my educated guess There is
going to be one basic 4-8-4 steam engine (that's the front part). AM may
very likely change some details, as it did with the 4-6-2 in its Southern
Cressent and B&O variations.

". . . . . the ATSF tenders look way too long. Did he say anything about
doing different-length tenders for the Burlington, other than changing the
wheels?

As to the tender - - It is gradually dawning on me that the basic ATSF 4-8-4
2900 series steam locomotive that AM is talking about is an oil-burner.
Somebody who knows more about the ATSF and/or steam needs to put ATSF 4-8-4
2900 in a Google search and identify for us the URLs that are really
relevant. I tried it; there's a lot of info out there.

AM's web site says
quote
"Will also be offered in Rock Island's Oil Burning 5100's (5110 & 5115) and
Lehigh Valley and The Burlington Route which will be available with 12 wheel
coal tender."
endquote
I have no idea how close to Rock Island prototype the tender furnished by AM
for that locomotive will be. But it's a safe bet the "12-wheel coal tender"
will be of appropriate length.
