The GP9 may be old, as far as their original construction goes, but
they've been rebuilt over the years by all the railroads.

In fact the last Canadian built GP9 built (1963) (and I think for North
America) is still in service locally (minus the dynamic brakes and the
high nose).

The U25's disappeared in the early 80's, I think, but there may be some
GP35's still going.  And SD60's are going strong - the SOO's pass
through here almost daily.

Tom's gear changing hint can help, but if you do install DCC, you can get
mismatched units (of different manufacturers also) running together
quite well as you can set the characteristics of each loco independently.
