Skip, I think perhaps you may be confusing the Lionel version of the Northern with the just-announced American Models version. The Lionel version is close to the spitting image of the original GAF, while the AM version is very, very close to scale. I have a 3rd Rail ATSF Northern, and the AM photo of their model compares very favorably indeed, right down to that elongated tender. It looks to me as though AM tried to make a model much, much closer to the prototype than did Lionel. Lionel was obviously aiming at the hard-core Flyer guys, something only Lionel can do, either with new issues or reissues, as they say the Northern is. They probably hoped to pick up a few of the S hi rail folks as well. Then too, the AM version is not even offered in UP, while the LAF is, emulating the Gilbert issue. I had ordered the Lionel version, but when I saw the AM photo, I jumped ship pretty quickly, canceling my LAF order and going with the AM instead. Cheers :) Roy Inman
