Folks...

Who was that HO guy who said: "S scale doesn't have very much." Is he
still around? Looks like good old S scale has three different and
distinct operating speeder projects underway all at the same time. Can
you believe it?

Closest to completion is the BTS laser-cut wooden speeder project
complete with knotholes and termites. Then, there is the recently
announced brass imported Korean painted RTR operating motorized speeder
project being managed by Bill Lane, Jr. (Thanks to both Bills!). Not to
mention a craftsman kit project led by the infamous "S"peedy Ed L. With
all these motorized operating speeder options to choose from, those HO
guys will flock to S scale! Right? Watch 'em come!

Which reminds me of a comment made by an old RR buddy by the name of Bob
Hogan. Bob said, while riding on the EBT recently, an operating speeder
is a ridiculous and boring project at best. Speeders will not pull
anything interesting (like a train). Speeders go very slow (about 30
mph, slower over switches) and take f---o---r---e---v---e---r to go
around a layout. Speeders are very small with a typical common Fairmont
S scale speeder able to fit within the confines of a one inch cube.
Speeders have no visible moving parts ('cept the wheels) and are boring
to watch. In short, according to Bob, there is no logical reason why
anyone should want one of these. And, y'know, I think Bob is right.
Which is why I want only two of them for my layout! Can you see 'em --
racing down the doubletracked mainline to see who gets to the speeder
shed first! See who punches the time clock first and reaches the
Altoona Curve beer in the bar just across the street. Oh what a blast!!

Maybe NASG could sponsor some speeder races at the next convention in
Michigan? Almost as exciting as watching ocean kayaking at the
Olympics.

Cheers....."S"peedy Ed L. (there is only one!)
