Kevin;
True, there are not many U25B's left in service, but there are some. Just
asking, how many 40' steel and wooden box cars are in revenue service? How
about 40' wood and steel ice reefers in revenue service? How many cabooses
still in use? How many 8 and 10 thousand gallon tank cars in revenue service?
Two pocket hopper cars in service? The list goes on.
Yet all the above are very much "in service" in S gauge. I can remeber working
in signal boxes on the New Haven RR and seeing all the above mentioned types of
cars behind U25B's. In my opinion they blend right in with S gauge operation.

When the AM U25B first came out - I did quite a lot of research to find out if
it is applicable to modern shortline use - by modern I mean the last 10 years.
The U25B is all but extinct in 'modern' day to day revenue use - although a
number hold on in preserved status. Where as the the GP9 rebuilt with air
filters and chopped nose is still very common. However within the last 5-10
years a lot of short lines that once existed with GP9s now use GP38s and quite
a few have moved to six axle power viz WSOR (Wisconsin Southern) which I was
photographing a couple of weeks ago - they are now using SD20s (rebuilt choped
nosed SD18s) and SD40-2s - guess what - you can't get a GP38 and SD40-2 in S
apart from in brass and they are difficult to get hold of .....its a truth not
recognised that S looses potential new modellers and has static growth because
essential locomotives like these are not available.....

Hi Ken, Thanks for your response. I want to model a fairly modern
era so I could use any of the locos, GP9s would be modeled as very
old, U25B and Gp35 middle age and SD60 fairly new. Eventually I'd
like some of each kind to mix and match on a local freight. Other
than the choice of gription wheels is there any improvement to the
U25B drive compared to the GP9 drive? Would there be any problem
running the various models together. Yes, I plan to use DCC and will
try to add soundtraxx. Regards, Dave
