and he notes -

I have that magazine on my already crammed bookcase of Sci-Fi, Ornithology,
herbal remedies and other odds and ends - "The Great Martian Railroad Race"
was the title by Eric Vinicoff, [Isaac Azimov Science Fiction Aug. 1988]. I
bought it for that story as I was curious about what a railroad on Mars
would look like.

Model Railroader ran an article some years ago about a railroad on the Moon
and a portion of the SAFEGE monorail was used in the movie "Fahrenheit
451" (though I think the Wuppertal would have been more interesting). One
of our productions - "Streamline Express" - takes place on a high-speed
monorail capable (so the announcer says) of going from New York to Los
Angeles in 20 hours - not bad for 1935! Curiously, it resembled the New
Haven RR's Bessemer steam powered "Comet".

Railroads have been found in other Sci-fi books as well as Tom Swift
stories too. One outlandish tale involved a giant iron man like machine
that was coal fired and powered trains by foot power (saving money on
wheels I presume).

I guess not all the far-out stuff was confined to Mars. When the B&M
demonstrated a Budd RDC through my home town in the early 50s, the local
newspaper hailed it as a 'space age' train. The B&M purchased nearly a
hundred of 'em with 3/2 seating. I guess the idea was to cram as many
people as possible in as little 'space' as possible...

Raleigh in far out Maine!
