I use a spline lattace type of roadbed for my layout. I used this on my old
layout and the new layout I am building. I hand lay my track. I cut a 1 by 4,
6, 8, or what ever size lumber I can get. It has to be clear lumber. I cut 1/4"
peices from the board. I lay the splines on edge, put a 1/2 ' spacer between
the spline. I use 3 splines and two spacers. This gives me a width of 1 3/4 ".
I then put a cap of 1/4" by 1 3/4" on top. I use window mullen strips. I put
the road bed on risers on standard benchwork. This road bed is very quite. The
reason it is quite is because it is solid. No vibration. I use matte meduim to
hold ballast in place. I realize this method is not for everyone. It is not
that much more expensive than anyother method when you by plywood, homosate,
cork, or other materials.
While building my new layout, I am using Tamolco flex track for the yard
area (code 83) and the track going from the bottom level to the top level code
(100). I noticed that when trains went from the hand laid to the flex track,
they are much quiter. Must be the plastic ties. So, I guess that flex track
will help the noise problem.
If anyone wants more info on how I lay the spline, contact me off line.
