Hi Barry, Yes, O scale has almost every possible car or loco that
anyone could ever want and compared to S scale the prices are cheap.
The only problem with O scale is the size makes it hard to build a
layout with much scenery. I've decided that I could build a more
realistic layout in a given space in S scale than in O scale, the
smaller scale allows one to spread out the scenery a bit for a better
proportioned look. The depth of benchwork in S scale is also easier to
work with, in O scale the scenes rapidly become too deep to reach the
rear. The sheer size of O scale equipment can also becomes a
distraction, certain objects look better at certain sizes,( ie, a 5 ft
2in. tall woman looks fine but scale her up to 6ft 10 in. and she
loses some of her charm) I've noticed that my railbox cars look better
in S scale than in O scale, something to do with the viewing distance
but I'm not sure why? One other thing to consider is that modern
equipment is very long, S scale modern cars are about as long as O
scale 40 footers so the radius for either will need to be about the
same. I originally built my present little O scale layout with 46 inch
radius for 40 foot cars, but I now model modern cars so the curves
are too tight, however the 46 inch curves will be just right for
modern S scale. Anyway just some more thing to consider....dave
