Howdy Esteemed Colleagues, It must be my day to type.
Twin-coil switch machines should be operated using a capacitive discharge power supply like a Snapper. We can make them at home following fairly simple schematics for $10 or less. When we use that sort of supply, the motor throws the switch very rapidly and then stops supplying power (or not much power) until the button is released. The coils will not get burned out. If the switch machine is mounted below the roadbed, it normally needs this extra kick to move the (somewhat) balky linkage. Once you use one of these things, you will never go back to the accessory terminal approach. Here is a link to a site with a bunch of handy circuits including a capacitive discharge switch motor suppy. http://www.awrr.com/ I have found Circuitorn Snapper supplies on eBay and at better hobby shops.
