Never saw the layout, but wished I had. Never met the man, but sounds like
we are on the same page. Perhaps, Bob, he is sorta like me in that the rail
height is not the priority; overall scale appearance is. And it sounds as if
he did what I am planning on doing: using 148 exclusively, therefore there
is no other track nearby to compare the rail height to. And even given his
excellent building skills, maybe he just did not want to take the extra
amount of care necessary when dealing with more "scale" rail and turnouts. I
know, I know, scale modelers who have been making layouts with it for years
say it is just as easy as the larger stuff, but IMHO, that is mostly
posturing. The smaller the modeled piece, the more critical it is to get
everything just right. A comparison can be made between model airplanes of
various sizes. A 1/16th" adjustment in a small half-A model can cause wild
gyrations in flight. But it might take a 1/4" adjustment in a giant scale
model to notice any in-flight changes. Likewise with track. There is more
room for error and, for a casual person such as myself, more room to be,
well a little sloppy, and still things run fine. I prefer to spend my time
on making scenery, weathering, building structures, etc., rather than
wrestling with operational problems.
Just IMHO :)
Cheers :)
