Hi Fred, I'm new to S scale too. I've found a few usefull
relatively modern cars besides the American models you mention. S
helper service offers a 3 bay covered hopper that looks fairly modern,
SHS also sells modern boxcars, coal cars, and stack cars from Des
Plaines hobbies as well as a 3 bay open hopper than can be used in a
pinch. Pacific rail shop or their new name gold coast makes a
centerflow 3 bay covered hopper that can also be cut down to make a 2
bay cement car, they also make a 50 foot boxcar that can be modernized
for a fairly recent era. I've seen some wooden craftsman type kits for
bulkhead flatcars and 60 foot reefers. A company called rusti-downs
(or something like that) apparently made some tank cars a few years
ago. Lionel has a few O-27 cars that can be re-worked into S scale
cars if you like that sort of thing. I don't know much about S scale
modern brass cars but they don't seem to be too common.
I've got photos of a few cars I've recently built in the files
section, look for the folder named "daves stuff".
It's kinda hard to find modern stuff right now but I imagine it will
get better, I see in their catalog that SHS is expecting a new FMC 50
foot boxcar next year.....dave
