John mentioned some good formats. Also, any word processor (Word, Word Perfect, Ami, OpenOffice, etc.) can also save in html format (granted, bloated size, but usable). Since we all either receive e-mails or read these messages on the 'net, we should all be able to view html documents or pull them into our favorite word processor, and this isn't dependent on the operating system or version of software. A text file as mentioned by John is another option - any formatting would be lost, but would be the smallest size and should be able to be viewed by all, regardless of operating system or word processing software.
