Folks, to put a new twist to this discussion of safety. We (Houston S
Gaugers) will be doing our first show this year --World's Great Hobby
at the George R Brown Convention Center this coming weekend. First
off please come!! there will be a couple of S dealers and some of the
biggies will be there also. Besides we will have our modules running
over 50' in length.
In the list of stuff venders and displayers have to follow, there
is mention about flame retardant skirting. I remember this has been
tossed about a bit in the past when the Fire Inspector shows up. I
wonder if the various foams we use could be a problem. We have had
several occurrences of nightclubs and other places burning up and the
years of law suits afterward. All these foams are made from oil and I
know most of the fire ratings are not good. Can anybody shed some light
(not flame) on the subject. Would a coating of paint help, or how about
some other coating??
In another matter, if one checks out the recent issue of Trains
magazine there a great shot of a KCS engine at the Kansas City Union
Station by non other than Roy Inman himself. Great shot!

>with reservation in my case <G>. I built a foam layout in three sections to
>go around the aluminum tree, ala the piece in CTT a few years back. Last
>year I thought my daughter was monitoring the layout. I also thought that
>the grandbaby (4 yrs) was playing just with "his" train. Not so. Daughter
>walked in the kitchen for a just a minute or two, and the grandbaby came
>running in saying "the train is smoking!" He had switched one of the
>turnouts without switching the other, the SHS SW-9 derailed, caused a short
>and the foam started to melt. I was in the basement and hearing the
>commotion, came running up in time to unplug everything and prevent a fire.
>We were considerably more careful this year. Seems to me that if one is
>going to have kids around, then the environment needs to be constructed in
>such a way as to allow them to play and therefore learn, and to also keep
>
>Bearing in mind of course, that if I had all the answers, I would be sitting
>someplace where the sands are white, where it is 40 degrees warmer, and
>where trains are the main occupation, not just a pastime.
>Happy New Year to all.
>Cheers :)
