Stan & List,

This is a very rough outline of the evolution of what Russ Downs, former
owner of Ace and Downs Model Railroad sold and produced. I do not know what
the timeline was, but I was a frequent visitor to Russ' house during the
last 10 or so years he owned the business.

1. Purchases Ace line of S Scale trucks. There was an O Scale line of some
similar parts that was sold before Russ became an owner of the S line.
2. Like Josh Selzter before him, Russ bought the junker A F cars at trains
shows, stripped and repainted them for resale.
3. Offered many different paint schemes using new old stock and reproduction
AF shells purchased from Hobby Surplus Sales
4. Offered repainted AF cars with conversion floors and Scale wheels.
5. There MAY have been some American Models cars that were assembled and
painted for resale.
6. Bought MANY 50' Pacific Rail Shops Undec kits, assembled and painted them
for resale in Scale and Hirail versions with his Ace trucks.
7. Bought MANY 40' Pacific Rail Shops Undec kits, assembled and painted them
for resale in Scale and Hirail versions with his Ace trucks.
8. Developed his line of modern tank cars with all new components, assembled
and painted them for resale in Scale and Hirail versions with his Ace
trucks.

Russ used HO and S Scale decals and dry transfers from many different
sources. He also custom made many decals sets just for his cars. He would
occasionally use 50' decals on a 40' car and vice versa because it was not
that important to him. Anything that had Tiffany on it, like the wooden
barrel flatcar, was named after his cat that he had for much of owning Ace.
I have seen Russ dry transfer a boxcar in about 10 minutes flat many times
while talking on the phone and watching a baseball game!

He sold the train business to the current owner, and then retired from his
high school guidance position about a year later. I just saw Russ at my
Christmas party here. He is doing fine, working full time as a teen crisis
social worker.

Thank You,
Bill Lane
