This concept looks very close to what Jim Six is doing with his new layout (seen at <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/J6-layout/> - almost 300 members), except there are no legs used. His cost is coming out to 1.25 per linear foot of benchwork (24" wide).
This will also be included in an upcoming Model Railroad Planner (not the one just off of the presses). The 11 x 50 around the walls benchwork was put up in 30 hours total by 2 guys.
