Hi David; NH bought Alco FA-1 and FB-1 units in ABA sets. Some time later the railroad wanted more B units to make ABBA sets, but Alco had moved on to the FA-2 series. So NH bought FB-2s (but no FA-2s, they were not in the market for A units).
They also modifed a pair of DL-109 A units to work as Bs, not having ever bought a passenger B unit of any sort. One of these modified DL- 109s got a most unfortunate "nose job" to provide a covered connection through the nose to the adjacent unit.
