Hi Group. To go along with Tom Hawley's info, the maximum weight on
rails used to be 263,000 pounds. That doesn't overrule the load limit
for that car, or apply to certain special cars that spread the weight
over a large number of trucks/wheels. What it means is that load limit
and light weight combined have to be at or under 263,000 pounds. A
couple of examples. A 100 ton coal hopper might have a load limit of
195,000 pounds, while a 100 ton gondola might have 200,000 pounds, and a
70 ton boxcar 140,000. All of which I have seen in real life. When you
add the light weight, they all come in at or under 263,000 pounds. Like
in the trucking industry. Their GCW, gross combined weight, has to be
under whatever the rating is for the road they travel. Hope it helps.
Barry.
