  Why don't you use cat litter? It's as close as your local supermarket
and you can choose the brand you want. Just make sure that you use
a magnet just in case there are some iron stuff in it...

  By the way, cat litter is just crushed stone so it should be fine.
but don't use the CLUMPING cat litter because as I found out (at
least for me) it's no good.

  Anyways, the idea is: just try one brand, if you like it's
texture, use it...! (sorry for the companies that sell S scale
ballast!)
