One simple method is to invent some rules for the train's work. For
example, pick up even numbered cars, drop off odd numbered cars, pick
up open-top cars, drop off enclosed cars, pick up any car(s) and drop
off an equal number of car(s) on the same siding, engineer's choice,
westbound cars are even numbered, etc. Advantages are no paperwork
and lots of flexibility and workable with just one person.
Disadvantages are lack of realism, but that might not be important for
just one person acting alone. After all, who would know?
Another idea is to use colored markers on each car. The blue marked
cars go on one place the yellow marked cars go to another place, etc.
In the old days, colored thumbtacks on the roof were used. Today,
some folks use decals on the tack board for the same purpose.
Advantages are no paperwork, flexibility (change the designated
destination for each color when desired), and workable with just one
person. Try this idea with tape until you know if you like it. Just
take the tape off when the grand experiment is finished.
Have fun...Ed L.
