Subject: {S-Scale List} One Man Operation
Thanks to all who responded to my questions about a one person operation. I
have many suggestions to consider, and I have a better idea of what to do.
This will make the hobby even more enjoyable than I thought possible!! What
a great list!

Ed,
I'll offer one more take on the one person operation.
I am a regular operator on a nice HO scale layout in a rural location but
not quite as far "out in the sticks" as I am. The owner is a very nice
individual who retired and moved to get away from the big city. During the
fall and winter months he has operating sessions about once a month, many of
the operators drive over 100 miles to participate. I only have to drive
about 50 miles. It takes 7 to 12 operators to have a "normal" session.
Sometimes he has so many operators that answer the call to a session that he
runs two complete sessions on the operating day, one in the morning and one
at night, thus it is not so crowded and everyone has a little bigger "job".
He uses the card order operation that someone else has already mentioned, an
operating CTC panel, with signals and remote operation of mainline switches,
and a fairly large double ended staging yard. I'm unsure of the number of
train movements during a session but there are probably 15 or so trains of
various types to run. He is an excellent host and makes an effort to see
that everyone has a good time.
Some operational layouts have considerable restaging to do when a session is
over. During the last session I attended, I asked him how much restaging he
has to do between sessions, and he said, "only one short train and turning
over the various car cards that require it. " He continued, "As a matter of
fact I often run entire operating sessions by myself. It takes me 8 to 10
hours to complete all the jobs,(trains, etc.), at my leisure; at hour here,
an hour there, etc."
So there you have it. You can have it both ways and enjoy.
