JRJ,
Saw your posted questions, don't have your e-mail, hopefully you
joined discussion group or perhaps Don T. can forward to you.

Having spent four years building an O Scale layout in Attic before
deciding to switch to S Scale I can tell you will need alot of space
if you intend to run large O Scale engines with passenger trains,
etc...

HO is most readily available and typically cheaper, although be fore-
warned brass items can be just as expensive and since HO is smaller
you will probably want more of them.

You have to like "S" to commit to it. You already seem like you
decided it might be the perfect size for you, but understandably
concerned about not having everything you WANT.

Perhaps the question you should ask yourself is whether there is
everything you NEED to get started in the perfect scale.

Also Kalmbach Publications has a excellent softcover compendium of
Tracks Plans from several decades for under $20. You can use it to
see what level of complexity you're comfortable with as well as
what'll fit in your basement. All of the plans in it are "tried &
true" with dimensions for every Scale (HO, S & O).

Best regards,
Dennis Hultay Bloomfield NJ

well as other sites. I am totally new to model railroading and want
to get started soon, but I am having extreme difficulty selecting
which scale I want to use. HO-scale seems too small for my desires,
but they have everything readily available to purchase for that
scale. O-scale also has plenty of equipment available, but I don't
particularly like the 3-rail track, and the size would require a much
larger and expensive layout. (I have an entire basement for
construction of a layout so space is not a problem. The expense and
work needed for landscaping such a large layout might be a problem).

in a heartbeat if scenery, structures, accessories, etc. were readily
available. I am not a model builder and don't really want to build
structures and paint everything. Thanks.
