Dave...
Regarding the radius of a Shinohara #6, someone once stated that their
HO turnout simply had the gauge widened in order to make the S scale
turnout. Without making it longer as it should have been. It is my
understanding (unverified) that the angle of the frog is correct, but
that it is the same length as their HO turnout. So......if you are
seriously curious, I suppose you could check the radius of their HO
turnout (at local hobby shop) and be approximately correct in figuring
the S turnout would have about the same radius.
In the good olde daze, I always assumed (yes, I know) that all #6
turnouts were the same. Somewhere along the line, an olde hand at
tracklaying informed me that the only thing common between different
brands of turnouts was the angle of the frog. Other than that, anything
and everything could and would vary between the different makers of
turnouts. Needless to say, I have found his comments to be very
correct. Some are shorter, some are longer, and some are in between.
The Shinohara #6 is probably the shortest so-called #6 in the history of
mankind. It has S width and HO length all wrapped up into one turnout.
A true multi-scale masterpiece!
If you are cramped for space and run diesels and/or small steamers,
Shinohara's short #6 might actually be an advantage. But if you are
running 4-8-4 locos, you will be very close to the edge of difficulty.
It can be done, but it might cost you some time, effort and aggravation.
Using a Tomalco, or almost any other brand, will provide greater length
when compared to a Shinohara #6. Using a #8 will also solve the
problem. Depends on what fits your space better.
Having fun yet?............Ed L.

Hi Bill, If someone with one of these will take a few minutes to
measure the radius we'll all know the true dimensions. I don't have any
of these or I'd do it......dave
