A while back there was some discussion on th S scale list about modeling
SFRD reefers using the AF reefer shell;

(There is also an article on this in an olde S magazine along with photo
and drawing of SFRD 11461.)

See these photos for cars of 13'-4" height with fish-belly center sill

There are also similar cars of 14'-1" height with straight sill.

The 11461 in the olde S scale magazine article is also a 14'-1" high car.

By my measurements, the height of the AF reefer is close to the 13'-4" height.

I'm told that these are rebuilt from swing door cars in the 1950's, from
several classes. I have scoured all my books, magazine articles, and on-line
sources and have found no mention of them.
I'm told that I need to get,
Volume Two, Refrigerator Cars: Ice Bunker Cars 1884-1979 .
by Keith Jordan, Richard H. Hendrickson, John B. Moore and A. Dean Hale
which is available at
http://www.atsfrr.com/store/book3.htm
Does anybody have that? I'd prefer not to buy it just to get modeling
information for 1 car. Can anybody provide info or suggest other on-line,
book, or magazine references?

Regarding decals, I have partial information regarding what is accurate for
these cars.
The photos above show one side of the cars. What was on the other side???
A curved line map was used in early 1940.
In 1940 - 1947 ATSF used a straight line map.
For 1947-1958 the map was replaced with the "Ship and Travel Santa Fe all the
way" slogan. These would be correct for cars rebuilt in the 1950's.

Microscale has an S scale set with the curved line map from early 1940.

My Clover House catalog lists ALL styles, with several of them available in S.
Tom Lennon has Enhorning decals for the third version, see below.

The first ID (SR-012) is the Enhorning number.
Numbers at the end are for reference; (BRH-226 is Champ), (22-12 is Walthers)

SR-012 SFRD Orange and Black Freight Reefer-"Grand Canyon" Black/White 5
BRH-226

SR-013 SFRD Orange and Black Freight Reefer-"Super Chief" Black/White 15
BRH-224

SR-014 SFRD Orange and Black Freight Reefer-"El Capitan" Black/White 24
 BRH-223

SR-018 SFRD Orange and Black Freight Reefer-"The Scout" Black/White 13
BRH-219, 22-12

SR-038 SFRD Orange and Black Freight Reefer-"The Chief" Black/White 14
BRH-225, 22-48

Tom also has:

SR-059 SFRD Black and Yellow Freight Reefer-8' Herald Black/White 11
HR-60, 22-43
See http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/rsPicture.aspx?id=27015
This lettering was also used on swing door cars.

I believe the next one is from the 60's - 70's
SR-079 SFRD Red and Black or Green Freight Reefer-Shock Control
White/Yellow 5 22-35/36/36A

Here is Tom's website.
