Hi all,
    Seems I recall one of the late John Armstrong's tricks was to use a 
length of small, insulated wire (non stranded) marked off in 1' 
increments to the scale of your plan, as a grade guide. It can be curved 
right on the center line on the plan, then re-straightened and re-used. 
I think this is shown in his book "Track Planning for Realistic Operation".
