Jim King Smoky Mountain Model Works, Inc. http://www.smokymountainmodelworks.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- Jim, I am currently trying to collect decals to do a pair of E8s in Southern's Southern Crescent paint scheme. Of course that is very different from doing a switcher or other freight locomotive in Southern's black tuxedo paint scheme. ----------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ But one of the decals sets I have found may be of help. It is Microscale's HO set 87-539. Obviously these are smaller than desired but perhaps they may be acceptable to you. They include lettering for 4 locomotves in yellow. There are 8 heralds with yellow background like the ones used on freight locos in the 1970s. These heralds are perfect for applying near the doors of passenger cars too. This set also includes the broad stripes (gray?) with a yellow stripe border. There are also some white stripe patters that you may find right for the end of the SW9 switcher. There are 9 different decals for sublettering for subsidiary roads like AGS or CNO&TP. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- I also have Microscale set 64-108 which is an S gauge decal set available from Des Plaines Hobbies. This is for passenger car units and includes both gold and yellow lettering. It has enough decals for most of the lettering of 1 yellow striped unit and 1 gold striped unit (Southern Crescent) It has one herald with yellow and one with gold like the ones Southern used in the 1970s. It also has some of the round heralds that were used in the earlier diesel years. You may find the yellow lettering and numerals and some of the heralds perfect for your freight unit. For my project it is unfortunate that this set lacks any sublettering, any numerals in gold although it has lettering in gold, and lacks train names for Southern Crescent, Southerner, and Tennessean. For the train names and for gold numerals I have HO set 87-62 ------------------------ S Gauge offers some pretty nice steam and cab diesels decorated for Southern but it is unfortunate there is nothing in the black tuxedo scheme that most of us are familar with. ------------------- Be aware that Des Plaines Hobbies has purchased the S line of Microscale decals ------------------------- -- I hope this information helps. ----------------- Earl Henry, Nashville.
