I was part of that discussion several years ago. I thought we agreed
the original posting was ok but the follow-on discussion was forbidden
-- and the heading had to indicate it was off topic. Or did I just lose
a major way to get help from my friends?

Greatly saddened and significantly intimidated,
Thorin

NO, can't do that!!!!!
ALL OFF TOPIC MESSAGES MUST BE SENT TO THE LIST MODERATORS RATHER THAN
TO THE LIST. The Moderators will decide if the message is important
enought to justify an exception to the off-topic rule. When members
decide for themselves to post their off-topic message, that is unfair
and discourteous to the rest of the list members, no matter how
important the message is to the writer.

If somebody wants to do a new poll regarding broadening the list purpose
you are free to do so. I believe that this issue was discussed long ago
regarding asking for computer help on the list, and that the membership
was polled and rejected the idea. A computer help question that is
within the scope of the list is how to use Yahoo.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled discussion.
