Just our infrequent reminder that our archives are public, so when e-mail
addresses are posted in the body of a message, they can be picked up by
internet spiders and spammers. If you need to post someone's address, try
replacing the "@" with "{space} AT {space}" - that is use the space bar, type
AT then space bar again. This will greatly reduce (but not eliminate) the
spammers ability to grab the address. Another option is to break apart the
address, such as "I'm looking for Joe Smith - I have his address as Joe.Smith
followed by aol.com" or something similar.
Also be careful about sending phone numbers or other personal information to
the list (such as I have 1,000 brass engines and live in Tranquility Base on
the moon). Hopefully our fellow list members are honest, but not every one
that can view these messages is.
Basically, use common sense, and if there is personal information involved,
especially in replies, please respond directly to the original poster, not the
group.
As an example, Google "John, Alan Gibson has 24.6 mm diameter drivers" and the
first hit will be message 38283 posted 7/29/06.
We did discuss the public nature of our archives quite some time ago, and the
consensus was to leave it as it is. This is NOT to be taken as a scare
message, but just a general warning.
