. Much as I love S scale, it will never grow more than it has now. HO
won't grow that much more either. Hell, some hobby shops now have
dropped N scale because the market is too small. The whole hobby is
not going anywhere! Why? Because there are very few true modellers out
there any more. Now before all of you jump down my throat, check out
what sells and what doesn't sell at your local hobby shop. What sells
is ready to run stuff that requires the buyer to open the box and set
it on the track.

Actually this is good news, if the hobby is not going anywhere
then that means it's sticking around! If the market size stays the
same but a small percentage of HO modelers get tired of working on
small models and move up to S then we'll be fine. and if all then new
stuff is RTR then that's a plus! it's a lot easier to keep track of
all the parts when the kits come pre assembled. I think it's just a
matter of promotion? maybe some S articles in model railroader or RMC?
perhaps a small layout how to build article, or how to build a
switching layout in S size? If some serious modeling was presented
then there might be more interest? If they can see that it's possible
to build nice stuff in S size instead of HO size then some will take
advantage of the larger size. If I was a manufacturer I'd build a
small S scale display layout similiar to this:

There's no reason that HO should have a monopoly on model press
articles, people will buy whatever they see, they just need to see
more "S"tuff.......dave
