Hi all; PRS makes 40 ft AAR design boxcars with pre-1944 style Dreadnaught ends and retangular panel Murphy roofs in both 10 ft and 10'6" inside height body styles. They make 50 ft boxcars with post-1944 Improved Dreadnaught ends and diagonal panel roofs. Standard Railway Castings Company (Earl Tuson - http://www.srcco.com/) makes resin ands and diagonal panel roofs to modify the 40 ft PRS cars into post WWII designs, although all these cars serverd until well into the 1960's and even 1970's.
The AM boxcar is a 40ft AAR design 10 ft inside height car, but with a diagonal panel roof and a type of Improved Dreadnaught ends which didn't exist as a combination in real life. In it's defense, it was tooled before prototype modeling became even as common as it is now (which is really still not too common). It is similar in this respect to the old "blue box" Athearn HO boxcar, which has been found to match only one relatively small class of Illinois Central boxcars exactly. To most modelers, it looks "like a boxcar", and that's enough. So the proportions or both cars are correct, but for slightly different designs (10 ft vs 10 ft 6 inch inside height) and the details on the cars are quite different.
