Ed,

I wired my AM Pacific smoker as you described. Actually, I have both the
headlight and the smoker wired to track voltage through the relay. The F0
output (headlight) controls the relay. It wasn't my original idea to do this,
somebody (sorry, I don't remember who) posted the idea and I just followed it.
One advantage to this approach is that I put the decoder in the tender and
reused the four wire harness provided by AM. This left the manual smoke switch
in line as well, so I now have the option to kill smoke power manually as well
as with the headlight function. I can run it all day without overloading the
decoder or the DCC system. One disadvantage of this approach is that the dim
function for the headlight is not available.

As a matter of interest, does anyone have any data on power draws of smoke
units in the market and on popular engines?

Regards....

Peter Gagnon.

Subject: {S-Scale List} DCC & high current loads........

One way to operate high current loads with a DCC decoder is to use
the decoder to operate a low-current- draw relay. The relay contacts
then close the circuit to operate (in this case) the AM smoke unit.
The smoke unit can be powered directly from the track and does not
need to be directly connected to the decoder at all. Thus, track
power can make the smoke unit smoke and the only current load that
the decoder need experience is to operate a small relay. Hope this
helps...Ed L.
