Wow! I didn't know the SHS cars had become so collectable. . . . . . . . . .
I thought it was just the Lionel and MTH boys who went ballistic!

Hope this isn't too far off subject, but collectors are all over. Here's a
story that was on another list earlier today
quote
About 10 years ago Micro-Trains came out with a [N scale] "pre-BN merger"
four-car set (one car each from CB&Q, GN, NP, and -- I think -- SP&S). M-T
either seriously underestimated demand, or had an issue that meant they
shorted the run, meaning it skyrocketed in 'value' almost overnight to some
ridiculous number (like $600).
A few months after the set came out the joint N Scale Collector and N scale
convention in Chicago asked Mike Danneman and I to do a weathering clinic --
so we had a little fun. We made a copy of the info sheet from the back of
the M-T set, and painted four undecorated Micro-Trains cars to match the
set, and used the shrink wrap machine to carefully wrap them. To a casual
observer it would appear, from a distance, to be the pre-merger set.
During the clinic, which was well attended by collectors and "runners" (to
use the N scale terms) -- we walked through various weathering techniques.
We then announced to the room we would show how to do some simple chalk
weathering on a ready-to-run N Scale car. Mike fished around in the box of
props we had and pulled out the collector set.
"Here, this looks good," I announced "cars of different colors, great to
show the techniques" as I held up the "collector" set.
Mike took a knife from the table and said "Let's cut this one open and see
what we've got."
There was an audible gasp from the back of the room and two guys yelled
"No!!!" "I'll give you $300 for it right now -- just don't open it."
We couldn't resist saying, "We're not collectors, and these cars will look
great all grimed up."
We eventually let the room in on the prank -- they seemed to tolerate it
since they've asked us back since.
. . . . . . .
