You guys are GOOD! No one else has ever been able to master both sides of the
market as well as you.

Have fun!

Subject: Re: {S-Scale List} SHS 2-8-0 Sounds comparison

  Dear Jack,
We get this questions quite frequently. We offered DCC in our
switchers since they were offered almost 10 years ago. All engines with
sound have been offered for DCC or LocoMatic. DCC has been steadily
increasing the portion of our engine market. One surprise with the
pre-ordered 2-8-0s is there were as many ordered with DCC as DC no sound
(AF comp. and code 110 combined). For code 110 engines, 95% of them
ordered with sound, and selected the Tsunami DCC. We have had more
customers purchase our Lenz DCC system since listening to the Tsunami
DCC 2-8-0 than any other project. The sounds and motor control in the
Tsunami was a huge advancement for Soundtraxx. Another improvement is
that these are bi-mode, they will operate on straight DC. This is a
huge advantage over the previous DCC sound decoders from Soundtraxx. As
far as sound go, the DCC system allows for many more possibilities than
LocoMatic. The Tsunami has 8 whistle choices embedded in the board,
random sounds like fireman shoveling coal, water stops, oil can and
ratchet wrench, are activated each time the engine stops. Automatic
signals where the whistle blows the appropriate number of times each
time the engine starts (direction dependent) and stops. The nice thing
about DCC "CVs" is that they can be turned off or on, and for sound,
volume can be increased of decreased.
We selected LocoMatic sound when we offered our first road engine,
the F3. It was the only system available that operated on both AC and
DC. It is a far simpler and less costly system than DCC. Some of the
diesel sounds were not available on our F unit with DCC sound decoders.
For most of our customers, we feel that DCC is a bit more complicated
than they would want to spend the time learning.
As far as sound differences, this is a very personal decision. We
have posted the DCC Tsunami sounds on our website. I am sorry we do not
have the 2-8-0 LocoMatic sounds posted. But, the best thing about all
of our engines are plug and play. Another sound or motor control system
easily can be installed into any of our engines. So no matter what
choice you make today, it can be upgraded in the future.
  Best regards,
  Don
