Fellow S Scalers
When I was real heavy into HO gauge modeling, I built a short module
or switching layout that was mostly out of styofoam.
The layout frame was 1" x 4" spruce or fir lumber, that was cut and
made two flat, rectangles about 3' x 4' each. The two modules were
held together by C-clamps under the frame work. I then took a sheet
of 1/2" thick pink styofoam and used Elmers brand white glue to
attach the foam to the frames.
Sice the modules were small, I needed no other means of support in
the center portions of either the right or left side.
However, if one is using foam to cover a larger area, some type of
center support will be necessary to keep the foam from sagging. What
might be a good solution is to use two layers of the foam, glued to
one another.
As for any problems with "drumming" when locomotives were run over
the foam scenery, I never noticed any.
That could have been because I used strips of poster board instead
of cork roadbed, was trying to model a down on it's luck branchline
rather than a class one mainline. I cut the poster board to fit the
radii of the curves and under the switches as needed. Everything was
glued down with white glue.
Where the coal mine and mountain were, I used layer upon layer of
the styrofoam until the "hill" was high enough then scraped the foam
with a fork to shape it. Once satisfied with the shape, I used very
low priced latex based tan paint to cover the foam, then applied
real dirt and crushed coal and Woodland Scenics grass while the
paint was still wet.
When the modules were completed, I found that they were lightweight,
sturdy and provided an excellent place to set my fictional HO
railroad into.
I'm working on my first layout in many years, this time in S Scale.
Thanks to John Degnan, he's the friend that got me into S Scale. I
plan to use many of the same construction ideas I used previously
with the HO modules on this S Scale module/layout.
Will keep the list up to date as progress is made.
