Not many original heavy pacifics were built, admittedly, but the most
beautiful steam locomotive ever (apologies to NYC hudson fans) is a very close
copy
of the USRA heavy pacific, but with 73" drivers--the resulting proportions are
an aesthetic triumph. Of course I'm talking about the Southern Railway Ps-4,
which was built in large numbers and served from about 1926 until 1952. For
years I have been having fantasies of marrying a USRA heavy boiler with a USRA
light drivetrain to produce one (or two or three) of these beauties.
