Read once that because of cheap labor and a lot of flat land in the
South these gons were used for coal where there was no trestle for
unloading. Also have a picture of a N&W low-side gon delivering sand
for steam locomotives on the Interstate Railroad. It was easier to
shovel out of the low side gons.
